A Cross Border Fee for Credit Card Processing is a fee that businesses pay to banks to accept credit or debit card payments. This fee does not include the percentage (interchange) fees charged by credit card companies like Visa and Mastercard. For example, if you swipe your credit/debit card at the local convenience store, the Cross Border Fee for Credit Card Processing would be the fee your bank charges the conomity store's bank to process the transaction, which ultimately has to be paid by you. Cross Border Fees can add up quickly and ultimately cost you in terms of higher prices when it comes time to pay the bill.

  • Visa Cross-Border Fee - Cross-border volumes are all transactions where the issuing bank is located in one country and the merchant bank is located in another. Cross-border fees are assessed for each cross-border transaction in addition to any domestic fees that may be billed with the transaction. Cross border transactions occur when a cardholder attempts to use their debit or credit card outside of their home network, typically resulting in a fee to the cardholder or a percentage of the overall transaction. Cross-border fees vary by country and network and can range between 1.45% and 3%.
  • Mastercard Cross Border Fee - Cross-border transactions are conducted when the issuer bank is located outside your country and the merchant's acquirer bank is located inside your country. Cross-Border transactions are subject to a Cross Border Fee, in addition to any fee that may be charged by either your issuer or the merchant's acquirer bank. Cross-border fees range from 1% to 6%.

However, Cross Border Fees for Credit Card Processing can vary widely depending on your product. For example, Cross Border Fees range from 2.50% to 3.00% for Cross Border Transactions on a Business Gold Rewards Card from Bank of America, but only 1.45% Cross Border Transaction Fee on a Platinum Plus Mastercard from Chase.

A Cross Border Fee for Credit Card Processing is charged by the issuer bank per Cross-Border transaction in addition to any fee that may be charged by the issuing bank. Cross Border Fees for Credit Card Processing are not limited to Cross-Border transactions, but can also occur when your card is used in a foreign country (domestic Cross Border Fee).

Cross Border Fees may be assessed on Cross-Border or domestic Cross Border Transactions if you use your card outside of the country that it was issued. Cross Border Fees for Credit Card Processing can be avoided if you pay your card off in full each month, as Cross Border Fees are only assessed on Cross Border Transactions.
